Indy Juneteenth Celebration Week

Join Indy Juneteenth for this year’s Juneteenth Celebration.

Due to COVID-19 this year’s festivities are going virtual. Also, Indy Juneteenth has a week full of events for everyone. It’s been a trying time for us all so let’s celebrate as we all make lemonade out of lemons.

-June 15th Monday is Favorite Freedom Fighter-

Use the hashtag #indyjuneteenth and post a quote or pic of your favorite historical or present freedom fighter. Also, there will be a surprise celebrity guest interview at 7:00pm on FB Live that you all surely don’t want to miss. Hint, they’ve been on The Breakfast Club and Hot 97! Flyer coming soon.

-June 16th Tuesday is BET Black Entertainment Trivia-

Join us and our friends as we do giveaways and host a black entertainment trivia night ranging from music to movies to television and more. Brush up on your black sitcoms, this will surely be lots of fun. Inbox us if you’d like to be a contestant.

– June 17th Red Velvet Cake Day-

One tradition in celebrating Juneteenth is the red velvet cake. Our ancestors weren’t allowed to have sugar when they were being wrongfully held against their will. So a way for them to make their desserts sweet, they used the hibiscus plant. This plant gave their cakes a red tint and nice flavor. This would be the inventing of red velvet cakes. This would be a sign, similar to jumping the broom, that a celebration was taking place. So since 1865, the red velvet cake has been used to celebrate Juneteenth. So, this year, we will be having a virtual red velvet cake tasting. We have chosen three local black owned bakers who will be making our dishes and we’ll go live with them to promote their work and for them to explain the process in how they make their desserts.

-June 18th Red Light Special-

Red drinks are also staple of Juneteenth. Join us and friends as we go online showcasing signature cocktails and also having spoken word from a few poets and music as we continue our celebration.

-June 19th Yellow Juneteenth-

As a sign of unity, we are asking that we all wear yellow as a symbol of turning lemons into lemonade. We’ve all had to do this during this pandemic, and our ancestors had to do the same to survive the chains that restricted them. If needed we have yellow Indy Juneteenth shirts available on our website.

Also, at 8pm, we will be having a virtual watch party. Miss Juneteenth will be available on digital platforms. Indy Juneteenth and friends will be watching at 8pm on Amazon Prime. Join us and we will discuss the movie afterward. This year’s Miss Indy Juneteenth pageant had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, however, sign ups will be open again for next year’s pageant immediately following the movie.

-June 20th Virtual Day Party-

RSVP on our website indyjuneteenth.com or just join us on June 20th from 3pm-7pm for a Virtual Juneteenth Day Party. There will be drum circles, vendor shout outs, live DJs, and much more.

We can’t wait for you all to join us. We are so excited to keep providing this Indianapolis tradition. Hopefully we can continue for many years to come. For more information, please visit https://www.indyjuneteenth.com/.

Indy Pride Virtual Celebration

Indy Pride is working hard to build engaging digital programming that centers BIPOC voices and leadership through our live-streamed channels!

From Indy Pride:

Indy Pride has intentionally dedicated our 2020 virtual festival to center the voices, experiences, and leadership of BIPOC LGBTQ+ community members. We acknowledge, as a predominantly white institution, we have work to do to better represent and serve queer, trans, Black, indigenous people, and people of color who are members of our larger community.

We believe that Black lives matter. We recognize the first Pride celebration was a protest lead by trans women of color, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera.

We acknowledge the fight against police brutality is a part of the LGBTQ+ movement. We stand in solidarity with those who fight against injustice and shine a light on their work.

Indy Pride hosts Patricia Yolonda Weave and Halle Pino will be taking us through this day of recognition, healing, learning, and celebration as we showcase BIPOC leadership, history, and talent within our community!

Note: We have moved this event to Sunday, June 21st, to work to ensure that we do not interfere with any protests organized by Indy10 Black Lives Matter.
